I told you so!

Aston Park vs FTU Juniors

Oh yea of little faith... I told you it would all come good!

What a performance! From front to back, wing to wing every one of the Flint Town United players deserved this. First to every ball, not pulling out of tackles, winning second and third ball through determination, covering for each other, holding position, looking for and passing into space the whole team were GREAT!

The first quarter was one way traffic with Flint having a lot of possession and plenty of opportunities in front of goal. The Aston goalkeeper played exceptionally well to keep the score at nil-nil until near the end of the quarter when a long low drive bounced just in front of him and found its way under his outreaching hand and into the very corner of the net.

You could feel the relief on the sidelines and in the team, that for all that possession the lads were in front. But after the events of last week we knew one wasn't enough we should have been 3 or 4 up. In previous games just 1-0 up at the end of the first quarter we might have been worried but this time all the lads kept up the pressure and fought for everything. Getting a second extremely well worked goal that flowed from a solid controlled clearance in defence, up the wing and across the goal to be put in at the far post - possibly our best move of the season for attacking pace and thought!

Towards the end of the second quarter our first mistake, an Aston cross played low across the face of our goal that eluded both goal keeper and defenders was met with a weak clearance that was thumped into the back of our net by an advancing opponent to make it 2-1.

The sidelines were nervous. How would our sons respond? But again they showed we shouldn't have been worried. The communication at the back stayed high, the position and structure of the team stayed intact and their heads stayed up to make it 3-1 in the third quarter. The thumping tackles continued and the sheer physical desire not to lose the lead meant we controlled the midfield and, most tellingly the wings. I don't think I've seen wingers with so much determination to tackle back and defend and when they had the ball to run either past or, if necessary, through their opponents. A cracking free kick from Aston rattled our cross bar and it was as though it reminded Flint not to slacken off as the next five minutes saw us camped in the Aston half. But to Aston's enormous credit they never gave up. In the Aston team you could see the kind of spirited doggedness that we seem to manage for half a game at a time and they were never really out of it until the last quarter. They played with spirit and fairness and a they made it a very enjoyable game.

A little tiredness crept into the final quarter with both teams looking a little ragged positionally but it was clear which team wanted the win more. Again flint dominated posession and when they didn't have the ball, the defence remained well marshalled with lots of communication and the midfield covering back and sweeping when necessary. We didn't look like losing this one, and for once we didn't.

The icing on the cake was perhaps Flint's final goal. We've always been able to deliver corners into the box pretty well, but we score few from them, whereas defending corners does seem to make us nervous and we conceded too easily. But this time it was our turn to celebrate. A superb corner was met at speed by a towering header that bulged the back of the net before the Aston goalkeeper could even move. That made it 5-1 to us. Say it again just to make sure. 5-1 to US.

Its worth adding at this point how enjoyable it is to stand on the sidelines and watch this team play - win lose or draw we seem to have more fun than the oppositions parents. The Dad's - normally the more vocal and shouting helpful encouragement like "man at the back" or "get goalside" are being drowned out by the Mum's with equally useful suggestions like "kick it" and "c'mon....somebody!"... heaven help us when we have to explain the offside rule to the Mums next season!

A massive thank you to the Flint coaches, the parents, Aston Park team, but most of all our players for a thoroughly enjoyable and well deserved WIN!!!

Snatched from the Jaws of Victory....

Connah's Quay Tigers Vs Flint Town United Juniors

Now I know how Inter Milan fans felt after the 2005 European Champions League Final in Istanbul!

We were 3-0 up in the first 10 minutes and coasting. Hard running, attacking the ball, finding space breaking fast in numbers and we ripped apart the Connahs Quay defence like they'd never played football before. Finally it looked as though it was going to be our day. Then just before the end of the first quarter they scored against the run of play to end the quarter 3-1.

I'm not sure what happened then. But somehow we were second to every ball and walking, with a number of players with their heads down and looking either disinterested or like they'd already won.

Despite that our forward play looked sharp and there was a lot of attempt to pass the ball around, it was at the back we suffered. Yet again failing to clear again and again from in front of our own goal. Our goalkeeper made a couple of excellent saves but it wasn't enough as the tigers rolled in 4 further scrappy goals where we just didn't do the basics despite screams from the sidelines to "just hoof it" away.

That's not to say we didn't have our own goal-mouth scrambles in front of the Connahs Quay goal. In fact one of them seemed to take about ten minutes and had every single member of out team lining up to lash the ball home with Tigers players throwing themselves in front of it time and time again but it just wouldn't go in. All credit to the Tigers defence for their stubborn bravery.

Then as we started to try and push forwards we found ourselves back to our old ways - with 3-4 boys ball chasing and often being able to throw a blanket over the entire mid field as they all tried so hard to get involved and make a difference.

Its hard not to get dispirited on the sidelines when we see the lads working so hard and playing some really good football only to see their lead disappear because at the back they forgot the basics and got down hearted again.

It WILL come. Of that I have no doubt. And next week its Aston Park. Dare I say we beat them 8-0 last year? Or would that be tempting fate?

On a different note, I apologise for the slightly intermittent nature of these comments, I know I missed a match report or two. But does anyone care? It would be good to see some comments or perhaps some other input from the parents? Do the lads read this? is there something they would like to see here?

Groan

Holywell Vs Flint Town United Juniors

If I watch this match a hundred times I dont think I'll understand how we lost.

It's not that we managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory but that having been visibly on top we invited defeat out on a date, flattered it all evening and shared a cab home before inviting it in for coffee.

This was a game we were capable of winning. The first 12 minutes showed us that. We were first to every ball, got the tackles in and moved the ball about quite confidently. The only thing we didn't seem to be able to do was shoot. Its not that we didn't have the opportunity but at every shooting chance we seemed to be getting in the way of our own players or wanting to take one more touch rather than just striking the ball. It wouldn't have been unfair for us to have gone into the first quarter interval four or even five nil up and having put the game to bed. As it was, one defensive lapse against the run of play and we ended the first quarter 1-0 down.

Having gone behind the wheels then came off. Visibly the boys were down and their body language showed on the pitch. It was difficult to rouse them into action and the longer the game went on the further down they got.

Against a team that we could reasonably have expected to beat we simply forgot how to play football and didn't put in the effort to make up for it. Time and again the boys pulled out of tackles, failed to clear the ball, left attackers unmarked and most notably of all started ball chasing and losing position.  We still had plenty of opportunities to score but more often than not you could have thrown a blanket over the ball and four of our own team with no-one looking for space and no width available and gave up the ball cheaply. By the time the fourth quarter came round it was hard to see a player running, most were simply jogging and we were over run.

It summed up the day when, awarded a penalty for deliberate hand ball in the third quarter, the Holywell goalkeeper pulled off the save of the match to stop an extremely well hit spot kick. It just wouldn't go in for us!

I really feel for the boys and the coaches. They genuinely are better than this. Much better.

We seem to have got stuck in a rut and dont believe that we are capable of winning. Yet playing like we did in the first quarter shows we do have what it takes.

Plenty of self reflection is needed among the players. I am sure not many of them are enjoying football at the moment but if they can dig deep and not give up I am certain that their desire to play and have fun will pull through later in the season, and they'll be able to look back on having over come their nerves and lack of confidence with some pride. It's times like this that I believe they call character building. Plenty of encouragement and support from the sidelines along with the belief that if they don't give up they will do better, will help to see them through these tough times.

Keep the faith!!
